John Le Carée 존 르 카레, John Le Cercle 존 르 써클, 1995

David John Moore Cornwell (born 19 October 1931) (pen name John le Carré /lə ˈkɑːrˌeɪ/) is a British author of espionage novels. During the 1950s and the 1960s, he worked for the Security Service and theSecret Intelligence Service, and began writing novels under a pen name. His third novel The Spy Who Came in from the Cold (1963) became an international best-seller, and remains one of his best-known works. Following the success of this novel, he left MI6 to become a full-time author.

스파이 소설의 대가인 존 르 카레(사각형이란 뜻)의 예명에서 차용한 제목의 이 작품은
20세기초의 러시아의 기하추상운동의 영향을 받은 이 작품은 원, 사각이라는 기본적인 기하를 야채 자체만으로 재현한 시리즈로서 사물의 관습화된 의미를 직설적이고 추상적으로 변형시켜 새로운 미학을 추구한다.

이 작품은 여러 기원을 가진 야채라는 소재들을 하나로 녹이기보다는 병렬하며, 

야채는 순수한 기하학적 형태로서 자연적, 생태적, 그리고 환경 친화적 동기를 위한 유일한 재료로 사용된다.

또한 이 작품은 ‘기호의 전복’이라는 명제를 실천하며, 대중적이며 토착적인 지식에 대한 언급을 통해 양가적인 상태의 중첩과 충돌, 하위문화 양식의 변용 체계에 대한 관심과 그에 대한 사적인 수행, 미술사에 대한 당대적 코멘트 등의 주제를 다룬다.
