Der Schatten des Körpers des Kutschers /The Shadow of the Body of the Coachman

The title of this exhibition, gleaned from a novella by writer and visual artist Peter Weiss, is usually translated to read „The Shadow of the Body of the Coachman“.

Here, it offers a vast associative area for an exhibition dedicated in its entirety to a fascination for all kinds of shadow-related phenomena. The double genitive of the title suggests that this is supposed to be about more intellectually attractive artistic figures than simplistic oppositions – different from those that, for instance, merely juxtapose light and shadow.

At least in the aesthetic field, mostly a third element will join seemingly clear-cut binary formations in time – and it is shadow which will be used in the artistic contributions to this exhibition as such an equally dividing and uniting „Third.“ In a sequence of three evolutionary stages, each of which will last one month, this Kunstsaele show will present a changing arrangement of works and comments, productions and reproductions, causes and effects, and everything in between.

In our understanding, shadows are more than mere „hostages of light“ (Evgen Bavcar), more than primarily visual events – they are always part of diverse other phenomenal realms. Special emphasis will be placed on something that could be called „sound shadows“, acoustic configurations, in which shadow appears as timbre, as resonance, as sound in a spectrum between tonal and noise-like qualities. Alongside paintings, drawings and sculptures, additional layers of the exhibition surface with works and quotations in and from „time-based“ media, and particularly installation works mediating between the visual and the acoustic. Those last-mentioned works are given their own space and their own time – to avoid excessive „nosebleed“ intrusion between sound installations was another reason to chose the evolving three-part structure of our schedule whose details you will find on our web page www.kunstsaele.de as events unfold. In the first phase, the mentioned installation space inside the gallery will host a work by Alvin Lucier, while the two following phases will present two works by Moritz Fehr.

Over the whole course of three months, the documentary film „No Ideas But In Things“ by Viola Rusche and Hauke Harder will be shown in a separate video space, accompanied by a program composed of shorter film and video works containing, among other things, video contributions by the artists of the exhibition.
